Challenge:

Ustigate designed and installed two high quality water features at Keel Square, Sunderland. The reconnection of St Mary’s Way and Livingstone Road allowed a highway to be turned into a significant new civic space in front of the Magistrates Court. The new area and water installations provide an easy and attractive gateway for users to move through the interlinked streets, allowing easy access between the retail centre of the city and the regenerated Vaux neighbourhood. This area also presents opportunities for public events and gatherings at the heart of the city.

Success:

The mirror pool and plaza water feature create an appealing, animated and distinctive focal point of interest at Keel Square, Sunderland.

The mirror pool takes the form of a boats hull to commemorate the proud shipbuilding heritage of the Tyne. It includes split weirs and seven bubbler jets that rise and fall to mimic the sea; each contributing to the local acoustics and water movements for everyone to enjoy.

The plaza water feature has 55 LED illuminated water jets. Each jet is controlled individually enabling the client to have a variety of sequenced jet displays. The LED lighting can be changed to reflect the mood at public events. Ustigate also designed and built a PWTAG compliant recirculation system to feed the feature, to enable the public to interact with the water safely.

Maintenance: Annual maintenance to commission and decommission, as required.
