Project No: 2289
Water Feature Type: Water Sculpture
Client: The Hurlingham Club
Situated in 42 acres of landscaped grounds adjacent to the River Thames in Fulham, The Hurlingham Club is recognised as one of the world’s finest private members clubs. Since its opening in 1869, The Hurlingham Club’s croquet and tennis lawns, botanical gardens and stately Georgian Clubhouse have offered some of the finest sports and social facilities to its members. The Hurlingham Club offers cricket, golf, an outdoor swimming pool and it is regarded as the birthplace of polo.
Challenge:
A sculpture was created by sculptor Barry Mason, as a centre piece for a water feature to enhance the grounds at The Hurlingham Club, London. Ustigate provided the mechanical and electrical design and installation.
Success:
The brass sculpture created by artist Barry Mason sits imposingly on top of the central dais of the water feature. The pool is clad in Portland stone with a central dais clad in copper. Water is fed to the top of the sculpture, cascading down and through the structure onto the dais, forming a taunt surface as it weirs into the lower collection pool. The water feature is lit up at night.
The filtration and controls system are sited in the basement area of the building with a remote control panel sited near to the feature for ease of control.
A frost stat at the front of the nearby building shuts down the feature in the event of a freezing risk and an anemometer enables the shutting down of the feature in high winds. All fittings in the pools were painted black to obscure their presence.
The sphere by Barry Mason is a stunning and beautiful water scuplture and this project was a joyful collaboration.
